Introduction

ARTS NOW - Promoting BC's Visual Arts

The concept for Arts Now came about while I ran my art gallery on Granville Street, it was called Lambert's Gallery & Shop.

My clients would often ask me the story behind the paintings or sculpture and about the artists. We are fortunate to have a wealth of talented artists right here in BC and I could visit their studios, learn how they created and communicate that information back to the client.

The studios were amazing examples of the artists' first work, current work and how they found inspiration. This sparked an idea where my acting background and presence within the arts community could work together in a show. So I created ARTS NOW.

I hope that I can capture your interest and share with you the joy of art. My goal is to promote BC's Visual Arts and raise the profile of our province.

The videos are now available through You Tube.

Episode 1

Tatjana Mirkov-Popovicki

Please click on the image and it will open a new window. This video is 10 minutes

This episode of Arts Now features Tatjana Mirkov-Popovicki. Tatjana is talented painter from Port Moody, BC and paints in watercolor, oil and acrylic.

Her landscapes capture important landmarks and scenes of Vancouver. Tatjana also paints incredible portraits in the difficult media, watercolor and often receives 1st place in juried shows.

The image to the left is a typical example of Tatjana's work. Its a scene of False Creek, east view, looking down on Granville Island and the Granville Street Brige.

She has a strong style that most people think is close to the group of seven. I think she is honored by that comparison as she is a big fan of all of their work.

I set up an interview in her charming studio. Please click on the video to watch.

Visit Tatjana's website for gallery representation and more examples of her work.

Episode 2

Ted Harrison

Please click on the image and it will open a new window. This video is 6 minutes

This episode of Arts Now features Ted Harrison, one of Canada's most recognized painters.

Ted moved to the Yukon in 1967 to teach art to secondary school students and adults on the condition there were mountains. When he first arrived he was painting in a very traditional sense, where colors and depictions of the land were true to life.

One day he was fed up and changed his mind. He decided to take a new approach and use color.

In this video we feature one of his paintings that marked a distinct change in his painting style. It is called Regina Hotel and was painted in 1969. Look out for this painting and compare it to his current style.

Ted now resides in Victoria and has a charming studio/shop in Oak Bay Village that is open to the public. It's a great opportunity to see his extensive body of work, buy an original or print and even see him paint (just call ahead to make sure he's in that day).

Visit Ted's website for more information on where his studio is located and contact details.

Episode 3

Stephanie Fischer

This video is only available through Blip TV and with the Quicktime application. This video is 12 minutes

We travelled to Nelson in this episode of Arts Now to visit Stephanie Fischer at her home and studio. Stephanie is an architect and clay artist. The image to the left is an example of her two creative disciplines in one.

Stephanie creates vases and sculptures in porcelain and terra cotta. She rolls out the clay to make a uniform thickness and wet slips the slabs of clay together to form these unique houses.

In this episode we begin to understand the amount of materials and time that goes into creating one work of art.

Stephanie lives and works with her partner Ian Johnston. Unfortunately Ian was in China on an Artist Residency during the interview taping. If you would like more information on the work they create and where to buy it please visit their website JohnstonFischer

Episode 4

Amanda Jones

Please click on the image and it will open a new window. This video is 7 minutes

This episode of Arts Now features an impromptu interview with Amanda Jones at the Birthplace of BC gallery in Fort Langley.

We see Amanda painting a scene of Stanley Park in this episode. It should look very familiar as we saw in Episode 1, Tatjana was also painting that particular stretch along the sea wall. Great minds think alike!

Amanda lives in Richmond and paints our rugged mountains, coast and trails in acrylic. She loves to play with light and her work usually features a dappling of the sun through trees and clouds.

The work to the left is a fine example of Amanda's talent. Isn't it stunning?!!

Visit Amanda's website for more information on her next art show and further examples of her work.

Episode 5

Julie McIntyre

Please click on the image and it will open a new window. This video is 8 minutes

In this episode we visit the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam for exhibition Sewn Stories, by Julie McIntyre.

Julie combines traditional quilting methods with innovative printmaking for an intricate and impressive body of work. The exhibition is divided into two parts: Bedtime Stories and Travel Stories.

In the Travel Stories series, Julie was influenced by her grandmother's box of travel photos.

We saw nursery rhymes, wearable art and quilts as part of the Bed Time Stories.

Julie was born in Toronto, in 1963 and is associated with the Malaspina Printmakers Society, on Granville Island. She has a background in printmaking dating back to 1986.

Visit Julie's website for more information and further examples of her work.
